The Brotherhood – Part 134

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

This weekend, I was again given a front-row seat to the sight of men sacrificing for their church. Yet another snowy Sunday brought several men from their warm homes to shovel ice and snow from church sidewalks, so their friends could enter their worship buildings safely. Given the sub-zero wind chills and the blowing snow, this was no easy effort.

But that’s what men do. We step up when the situation calls for faithfulness. We don’t sit back and hope someone else has it covered, or pretend not to see our phone light up when our church needs our help.

One of the commitments of the Brotherhood is a choice to be faithful to God and to my local church. We are determined to serve in whatever way is needed. I smiled when I saw a man take a shovel from his Sunday school teacher’s hands. “You’ve got to teach us this morning,” he insisted over the objections of the willing efforts of the teacher. “You get ready in there and I’ll take care of this out here.” That guy’s a champion!

Let me challenge you to find a way to be a champion for your local church too. The guys I was privileged to pastor demonstrated their faithfulness in seemingly hundreds of ways. I can’t begin to describe what a blessing it is to know there are men you can count on when a need arises. Be one of those guys and your life will have a greater impact than you’d ever expect.
