The Brotherhood – Part 114

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

Well, another star athlete has proven the feet of clay beneath his cleats. Alcohol and bad decisions, two friends that are virtually inseparable, have brought him down in public shame. Jersey sales will slow, broadcasters will replay his sad story, and we’ll wait for a future comeback story to noddingly approve.

It must be difficult when your failures are so public.

For most of us, there are no cameras chronicling our stumbles. We live in relative anonymity, escaping the glare of media lights when we make our choices. But that doesn’t mean our weaknesses go unseen. In fact, ours can have an even greater and more lasting impact, because someone does see—our kids. Children are many things, and on that list is the truth that they are sponges, soaking up our failures and learning things we wish they wouldn’t see.

When you take an unwise inch, your child can be launched several feet down that same path. When your individual choices are poor, your child chooses their paths. As parents, we can never fully grasp the influence we have on the ones who call us dad.

Making wise choices gives my kids a chance to live quality lives. Living carelessly, taking advantage of situations for selfish aims and failing to do what is right at every turn, pave a dangerous road for those who are watching closely. They need to depend on us, and they want to admire us. So whatever our road, they bravely follow, and usually run past us in the end.

No, your mistakes don’t make the news, but they do become headlines in the life of your child. So choose well…for yourself and for those who are trying to fit their feet into your footprints.
