Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 8

8. Yet to all who received Him (John 1:12).
Perhaps the most challenging message for the modern Church is how wide the door is open for those who would connect with Christ. No one is held back for cultural, economic, or even behavioral reasons. The door is open to all. In Jesus’ day, this challenged the religious as much as it challenges us. Those who see themselves as righteous often use their life choices as a justification for drawing lines between themselves and those around them. When Jesus implies that those lines don’t exist (and Paul later affirms this mightily), the religious struggle to find a foundation for their self-proclaimed superiority. The idea that any may receive Him eliminates the walls our nature seeks to build.
