57. Could this be the Christ? (John 4:29b).
What a compelling question for a Samaritan woman to be asking! But it’s the question that matters most. She brings a clear testimony of what she has seen and heard, and her manner reveals the conclusion she has drawn, but she doesn’t confront her neighbors with statements. Instead, it’s a question–one that is theirs to encounter, to wrestle with, to ultimately decide for themselves. This is the invitation to faith. One cannot convince another from his own experience alone. The one who is to believe must face the question for himself and encounter the remarkable Savior for himself. Her invitation was “Come and see” not “Believe what I believe.” Somehow she knew that her testimony would be insufficient for others. They would need to answer her question for themselves. And…so must everyone that we encounter on our streets.
