51. We worship what we do know (John 4:22).
Do we? Jesus’ words to the woman highlight the Jews’ long-time knowledge of God. He has been faithful to them for generations and they have volleyed between righteous pursuit and tragic neglect throughout those many years. So when the Jews worship God, they act out of what they know. Do we? While Jesus’ words distinguish the spiritual history of Jews and Samaritans, they also point to something for us. Like the Jews, we can lose sight of the God we know, and become focused on other priorities. We can fail to be the people we know we should be–perhaps because the idea of worship becomes routine, or worse, self-focused.
