Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 349

  1. Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time ((John 21:17).

Three denials. Three questions of love. Jesus knew every one of Peter’s failures and every one of them mattered. Now, in this moment of restoration, Jesus walks His broken disciple back through the debris of his weakness, not to punish him or demand that he remember, but to demonstrate the fullness of his forgiveness. If Peter hadn’t realized why Jesus asked these questions, He certainly did on the third time. That’s likely why the third question felt different than the previous two. When Jesus makes you confront your own failures and look closely at each and every one, know that His purpose is merciful. Only a forgiveness that covers every single sin is truly merciful.
