Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 342

  1. But that night they caught nothing” (John 21:3)

The rest of the chapter typically gets our focus, while this key phrase often gets missed. They caught nothing. Their days of fishing have come to an end. There’s no future in their past. Peter and his little band of helpers can’t put their hand back to this plow with any success. Why? Because they’ve been tabbed for a new journey–one Jesus promised them in a similar event three years earlier–”you will be fishers of men.” Don’t think you can just go back to what you once were after Jesus has called you to new life. The old life won’t work, no matter how familiar it might be. You were made for more–and that more is the future you want.
