30. How can a man be born when he is old? (John 3:4).
Nicodemus’ incredulous question is more than just a concern about the physical impossibilities of rebirth. He wonders how a man can change his ways, especially when his ways has built the life he has. Nicodemus has chosen a path that’s brought him to a place among the Jews–a place of respect. How can he lay that aside at this point in the journey. For Nicodemus, the night meeting has already crossed a line that could cost him some of his reputation among the Pharisees, but a daylight decision to follow Jesus will cost him far more. This is a true “counting of the cost” of following jesus, something every leader needs to fully grasp and perhaps re-engage.
