- “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later” (John 13:36).
We think we want to go with Him. Peter’s follow up expression fits each of our hearts. Lord, why can’t we go with you could easily be interpreted, Please let me go with you. But we can’t, at least not yet. You see, where Jesus was going was through a door not yet opened. The promise of Heaven, which will unfold more clearly in His next statements, was only a plan. The place He was preparing could only be prepared by His death on the cross. So, No, Peter, you can’t come with Me yet, but soon you will be able to go where I am going. Wow! What a revelation of salvation’s true nature. By His death, Jesus opened a door that no man could open. Elsewhere, John called Him the Door itself. The day of that reality was now at hand.
