Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 220

  1. “You should also wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14).

There it is. The clear directive to do the unforeseen. For guys that are excited about ruling and reigning with Jesus in the kingdom they thought to be just around the corner, the idea of picking up the slave’s basin is hardly on their radar. This “kingdom” they’ve left all to gain is now about serving and death and a lot of other elements they never imagined they’d confront. They want to win, to be on top, to trade their low places in life for the high ones that look so appealing. Slaves ’til you die is too close to the life they have seen up close. Washing Jesus’ feet would be fine and fully expected, but washing each other’s doesn’t fit with the world they thought they were getting.
