- Jesus knew that they Father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God (John 13:3).
He knew. Though some make a habit of questioning the point at which Jesus fully understood His identity and mission, all must agree that such knowledge is complete in the moment described in John 13. He is God. So what does God do when He’s surrounded by the weak expressions of humanity? He dons a towel and hoists a basin of water. He washes the feet that He formed from the dust of the ground. He assumes the lowliest place in the room though He is fully aware that His greatness overpowers anyone who might enter there. John would later say that “God is love.” It’s easy to understand that impression when His hands caress your feet, gently removing the dark soil that’s accumulated there. He is God with a servant’s rag.
