Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 204

  1. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die (John 12:33).

While seemingly a mere narrative comment, these words illustrate something very important for the student of Christ–meaning is always best determined by those closest to the event. Jesus’ statement that He would be “lifted up” could be interpreted in many ways. Did He mean the cross or the ascension or when we “lift Him up” with praises? John answers that for us. He was there. He understood Jesus’ meaning in the moment, and he tells us plainly what Jesus was saying. As followers of Christ, we must listen not only to the words of Jesus. We must also hear those who heard Him and allow their insights to shape our understanding.
