Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 196

  1. “The man who loves his life will lose it…” (John 12:25).

What does this mean? Christians often quote it, but have we really grasped its intent? The idea that seems to be behind Jesus’ words asks the question “What world are you living for?” If you are focused on this life and achieving greatness here, then your pursuit will one day be cut off. Jesus is speaking of His own death when He says that this is the path to His intended life. He must die so that a harvest can follow. But His sacrifice points the same question to us. Which world are we living for? If we are consumed with our achievements in this world, our days of success will be numbered. But if we yield our lives to eternal purposes, we will even find enduring meaning for these days we are currently living.
