174. “Lord, the one you love is sick” (John 11:3).
Why does God respond to us in our moments of difficulty? Here, Lazarus is sick and his sisters come to Jesus with expectation. Sure, they know (and we know too) that He has the ability to heal. Already Jesus has performed more than enough miracles to justify their faith in His ability. But the bigger reason for their expectation is revealed in their appeal…”the one you love.” Mary and Martha assumed Jesus’ quick response because they knew of His love for Lazarus. Now the story will unfold differently than they expect, but these women give us our own reason for expecting God to respond to our prayers. He loves us. And when you combine love and power, well, that’s a combination that’s not easily turned back.
