164. “I am the gate” (John 10:9).
Jesus’ clear point is that He is the only gate for the sheep. There is no other route through which access to God can be gained. Only through faith in Jesus can we enter into relationship with God and become the “sheep of His pasture.” This revelation forced an even tighter monotheism on the devoutly monotheistic Jews. They were the people of one God, but Jesus’ audience was unwilling to accept the idea of Jesus as the one path to come before Him. Of course, they were not people of multiple paths. They just wanted to be the guardians of the road they had taken. Our tendency is much the same when we want to think that God is like us or most clearly seen in our own experience of Him.
