140. “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves to anyone” (John 8:33).
Sometimes we’re not honest about our true situation. While those who spoke to Jesus may not have been personally owned as others have in slavery, their history is filled with such reality. And they currently live under the thumb of Roman rule. Even if Jesus had meant the kind of freedom they were thinking, they still needed that freedom too. Of course, His offer is for something much deeper, but this moment in the story shows how careless of facts we can become when we get defensive. When we are defensive, we sail alone in our own small ship and will throw truth overboard if necessary to stay afloat.
