129. those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first (John 8:9).
There’s something in age that adds to wisdom. In this story, Jesus’ reply has confounded the efforts of the religious leaders to corner Him in an untenable spot. Now He has turned the focus onto their own sinfulness, and it’s the older leaders who see it and leave quickly. They know He’s put their hypocrisy on display, so leaving the moment is the wisest course of action. The younger stay longer, perhaps thinking they can conceive a retort that will put them on top again, but the elders are wiser and they know such a response isn’t possible. So the best course of action? Leave the moment and let the focus settle on others.
