102. From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him (John 6:67).
Why did they turn back? Because Jesus insisted that He alone was the path to the Father–there is no other Way. In the first century, His followers were persecuted, not for what they worshipped, but for what they wouldn’t worship. They would not accept the validity of any other path. They would not worship the Emperor. They would not tolerate the pagan practices of others. They insisted on only one way to God. One wonders if this is not to be our litmus test as well. Is the modern-day tolerance expected of citizens a reasonable parallel to the line Jesus draws in the sand? Perhaps this is the seedling of our future persecution.
