Notes from the Journey with David – 90

90. There is no representative of the king to hear you (2 Samuel 15:3).
Absalom’s statement is likely not true. He sits at the gate, looking to influence people from throughout the land. By insisting that only he can help, he undermines David’s role as leader. Of course, he will ultimately use the connections he makes here to fund his rebellion. But the statement itself matters. Absalom creates the impression that their true leader doesn’t care about them. People can be easily manipulated if they are convinced that those in authority don’t care about their needs. This is one of the most insidious forms of gossip in an organization. The leaders are painted badly, and those gossipping claim to be the much needed answer. It’s a lie, and those swept up in it will suffer soon enough.
