143. But show kindness to the sons of Barzilla (1 Kings 2:7).
When a leader reaches the end of his tenure, he looks back and remembers many things. Some remember the hard times, or the moments of failure where the emotion remains unresolved. Others remember the greater moments where victory came against all odds. But most remember those who stood with them in hard times. These are the true friends who didn’t run or switch loyalties or seek their own protection. These are friends who believed in the mission and didn’t let self-interest or self-preservation lead them to chase after others. Barzilla was one of those for David, though his name appears nowhere else in the stories. David knew his faithfulness and wanted his son, Solomon, to maintain his spirit of honor.
