130. “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” (John 8:10).
The accusers are gone. Rocks have been returned to the dust, and the woman lifts her head to see the crowd has thinned. No show here, only freedom. This is the nature of Christ’s forgiveness. He shields us from the justifiable judgment of our path and opens an unexpected door into freedom from sin and its ultimate impact. No, the woman’s world is no less complex. No, the story of her adultery still plays in the background as the reasons for her tragic dalliance are awaiting her return. But for this moment, it’s all gone and the world looks a bit different than before. And with surprise endings often come new beginnings. Maybe a different life truly is within reach.
