128. “If any one of you is without sin…” (John 8:7).
In this tense moment, Jesus shifts the focus. To this point, all eyes had been on the woman. After all, she is the one who has sinned and it is her sin that justifies this confrontation. But Jesus’ question causes the eyes to move to new targets. Now people are looking at the ones with rocks in their hands. Do their lives justify their actions toward this woman? When the focus shifts from others’ sins to our own, the story quickly changes. We cannot stand the bright light of God’s holiness any longer than those we more easily criticize. We are in trouble when the microscope is aimed our direction. And yet, it is in such moments that we find our right place–in need of God–and our right attitude toward grace extended to others.
