As we have frequently said, inward focus is the death knell for the local church. Once we begin thinking that church is for us and about us, we lose our very reason-for-being. Little wonder that the blessing of God ceases. My stomach lurches every time I hear someone say, “Well pastor, we’re the ones who pay the bills around here…” Such thinking reveals that we don’t understand the most fundamental truths about Jesus’ Church. We’re on a mission!
Church isn’t about us!! It’s not about what we want and what we like. If you want that, join a country club. Their business is to cater to the needs and desires of their members. Not the church.
The Church is about HIM and THEM! The Church exists to exalt Him and to reach them. And God set this up in such a way that if we do that, He takes care of us. He said, “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all things will be added unto you.” The Bible offers passage after passage, story after story, where God takes those who focus their hearts on Him and on others, and then blesses their socks off!
I remember the key line of a little song we sang in Children’s Church—I don’t remember the tune—but the song spelled JOY as Jesus first, Yourself last, and Others in between. That’s the kingdom strategy in a nutshell. It’s why Jesus called us to a life of servanthood—so that He could bless us as we put the needs of others first.
Inward focus is the momentum killer of the Church. We’ve got to set our gaze out there and GO!
