Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 332

  1. They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead (John 20:9).

No expectation. The disciples lived the so-called “Passion Week” with no understanding of what would come next. All of the active scholarship of the day and the debates about resurrection had not uncovered the promise of the Messiah’s resurrection. They didn’t know. They weren’t even wondering or hoping. That’s what makes the previous verse so significant. John saw the empty grave clothes and immediately believed. He chose an explanation that defied his own expectation. He is risen wasn’t what he was thinking as he ran toward the tomb. But young John immediately connected the dots between the amazing power He had seen in Jesus and the confusing feeling he battled inside that tomb. And he believed.
