Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 324

  1. “We have no king but Caesar” (John 19:15).

I arrive at this verse in an interesting timing. Political elections swirl around us bringing a mixture of reaction. Some want to hold to a moral high ground, believing that a leader’s character ought matter when we have the privilege of a ballot. But the evidence points to the pocketbook as the real gleaner of votes. An apparent majority will trade their vote for economic promise–the potential or dream of a better life than the one currently enjoyed. So righteousness and character, if it can be found in modern elections, must sit in the back seat while the dream of larger incomes and better interest rates steer us forward. No surprise really. Had Jesus threatened the Empire in John 19, He might have received more votes. Mankind has always given its vote to those who will conquer our Romes rather than those who might lead us to God.
