Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 298

  1. “For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them” (John 17:8).

What must it have felt like for Jesus’ disciples to hear their Master pray such words?! Imagine the affirmation of their choice to believe. When Jesus thanks the Father for you, that’s a moment you won’t easily forget. But these aren’t words reserved solely for the near dozen who heard them spoken. Today, our best understanding of Jesus’ current role is much the same as what we see Him doing here. He is interceding for us–praying to the Father on our behalf. And what is He praying? Well…He could be praying words like these. While He may also be asking of the Father for us–something He’ll do for them in the next moment–He could be thanking the Father for us, if we meet the criteria of His celebration. They believed…they received…they obeyed…and for that Jesus gave thanks.
