Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 291

  1. “Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name” (John 16:24).

Here lies a substantive change in the disciples’ relationship with Christ. For a few short years, they have brought their needs to Jesus along with the many needs of others, and He has responded with remarkable power. But now that He’s going to the Father, there will be no more such requests. Instead, now they will bring their needs to the Father, asking in Jesus’ name. Some might see the difference as semantical, but its message justified mention in this key moment where Jesus instructed His disciples. Their relationship, through Christ, is with the Father. They will approach His throne just as Jesus did each day–or perhaps more accurately, because Jesus did.  He has proclaimed Himself as the path to the Father. Now He is helping them see some of the implications of that truth.
