Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 284

  1. “He will convict the world of guilt…in regard to sin because men do not believe in me” (John 16:9).

Sin is more than the random life errors and evil choices that dot our journey map. Here, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will convict us of guilt and our need for a Savior by first convicting of sin–sin defined as not believing in Jesus. Is this a new sin to add to the list? What the context seems to be telling us is that our refusal to believe in Jesus prevents us from engaging the good news that He is returning to the Father. He has come among us, shown us the Father and the path to Him, and now returns. But because of our unbelief, we will miss out on the benefit of his new location. He is there for us, to pay for our sin, to advocate for our eternity–and it is our unbelief that causes us to miss out on the greatest hope we could ever know.
