Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 274

  1. “This is my command: Love one another” (John 15:17).

The concluding sentence of this amazing paragraph defines the disciple’s best response–love one another. After a compelling challenge that forever defines the life of a Christ-follower, and a clear message that only fruit-bearing is acceptable, Jesus points to this single assignment. It seems as though this three-word directive aims at capturing the link between behavior and being. To abide in Him, to be a fruitful branch, the principal activity is love for these who are within reach. Here’s the truth that may evade some who claim to follow Jesus–if you want to love God, you must love one another. The priority given to love was ultimately captured by those whose writings populate our New Testament. John surely understood it. He wrote that if we can’t love the “one we can see,” how could we think we can love the One we can’t see. Even Paul–the strong-willed guardian of pure doctrine–came to see that without love, even the most spiritual among us are just a bunch of noise. There is nothing that matters more. If you claim to be growing in Christ and aren’t growing in love for others, you have deceived yourself.
