Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 236

  1. “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

The first commandment–often lost in the New Testament’s slightly different wording–is that we would have no other gods. Here, Jesus makes it clear that there are no other. And, there is no other path than the one He is laying down. Every generation has battled this issue on some level, and even our modern ideas and technologies can’t keep this question from the front burner of our religious understandings. No amount of tolerance or peaceful coexistence can change the reality that all other paths are invalid. Yes, every individual can have his right to trust other roads protected, but that doesn’t legitimize his road. That there is only one road isn’t intolerance or elitism. It’s fact.
