Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 235

  1. “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

We don’t know the way, Thomas insisted, and yet they had already found it. Somehow we always want to think there’s something more, some other requirement than faith. We tend to find security in our doing, as if one more step or achievement will settle our uncertainty. But faith must always stop short of doing enough. Faith reveals the inadequacy of action. We can’t do enough so faith ceases to try. We can’t earn our way, so faith puts its hope in the One who has earned its path for us. Thomas’ desire for the “one more thing” that would make his eternity feel secured can never be answered in the way he (or we) desire. We must trust the One who has gone there first and put our full weight on His promise that He will come to take us there–just as He promised.
