Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 211

  1. The devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus (John 13:2).

While it is clear that Christ’s death was a part of God’s eternal plan, the parties involved proved their culpability in their actions. Satan has played his hand and Judas willingly played along. Those who insist that God dictates every event in human history would lay full responsibility for these evil plans at His feet, but John reveals clearly the ones responsible. And when we sin, we are responsible too. Those who hold that God’s sovereignty overwrites man’s choice open the door to all kinds of troubling results. Judas’ acts of betrayal are exactly that–Judas’ actions. And we will be held responsible for ours as well.
