Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 195

  1. “unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains a single seed” (John 12:24).

Modern leaders speak often of achieving multiplication. They chase after the kind of church growth that grows exponentially. It’s a good goal. Surely, with an all-powerful God at the helm, the same kind of rapid growth experienced by the Early Church and the modern Pentecostal church is within reach. But Jesus tells us something in these words that reveals the true catalyst of such growth–death. Only when we lay ourselves down sacrificially will God begin to exert His power on our behalf. When we die, He can live through us. When we die, we remove ourselves from the center of the action so all attention and glory can be His. Not until we lay ourselves down, by truly humbling ourselves will we ever see the dreams of multiplication come to pass. And that truth usually works against our natural motives. We want to build something great for Him, but God wants to reveal Himself through us–a vastly different objective and path.
