Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 171

171. “My sheep listen to my voice…and they follow me” (John 10:27).

To follow…what does that mean? Most of us want to be in the lead car. We want to decide direction. We want to determine pace. We want to make the decisions. In fact, such self-determination is at the core of our life philosophies. But following requires something entirely different. To follow means to give up our seat in the lead car and fix our gaze on its bumper. We must do as the first car does, go when it goes and stop when those brake lights are illumined. Following is focused on obedience. Can we give up the decision-making in favor of One who is far better at it? Can we obey His commands when something inside us wants to do otherwise? This is what it means to be a sheep in Jesus’ flock. This is what it means to be His child.
