The Brotherhood – Part 166

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence.Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

Over the past three years of writing this weekly blog, I have tried to highlight a number of the critical themes of becoming a godly man, giving special emphasis to the four-fold commitments many of us made nearly a decade ago. But of all those topics, one has dominated these pages–the call to be men of purity.

The emphasis makes sense because sexual temptation may be the most common and most destructive challenge men face. Certainly there is very little in our culture to steer us from the devastating results of chasing after an insatiable lust. We are confronted with its lure on every street corner of life. The Book of Proverbs is filled with admonitions to steer clear of sexual temptation, perhaps indicating that the modern difficulty is really nothing new.

But yesterday, I learned of another friend who has succumbed to this beast. My thoughts are a mixture of heartbreak and anger, knowing the damage that’s been done to the best things in his life and the long road ahead if this moment is to be overcome.

Guys, stay alert to this threat. I have often said, “Sin makes you stupid,” and I know that quote isn’t original with me. The intent of those four words isn’t to criticize the sinner or to somehow vent frustration in his direction. Instead, that phrase underscores a very real truth. When you choose to sin, your good judgment is compromised. You begin to believe that bad things are good and vice versa. Up becomes down, wise becomes foolish, and the tragic road grows wider and easier to walk.

You MUST steer clear of lust–the longing for that which is not yours. When you focus on what you don’t have, you increase your unhappiness with what you do have. Celebrate the wife you have and you won’t have need to think of others. As the Bible commands, “Rejoice in the wife of your youth” and your decision-making skills won’t be corrupted.

Frankly, guys, this is life and death for the life you really want. Even the tiniest missteps off of the righteous path can begin to form a path of their own. Live in a manner that’s trustworthy. Limit your entertainment to those things you’d watch with your wife and/or children at your side. Don;t be foolish or think a few strides in another direction won’t really harm anything. Like a driver taking a wrong turn, you need to stop. To keep driving will almost certainly result in getting even more lost.

So take your commitment to purity seriously. Make your integrity the greatest of your possessions and guard it with your whole strength. Be the kind of man God intended when He formed Adam from dust and gave him a partner for life. Sometimes the greener-looking grass is filled with snakes.
