Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 158

158. “Who is he sir?” (John 9:36).

Tell me so that I may believe…wow! One might expect such a reaction to suddenly receiving sight, but still, this is an amazing statement of faith. After having been expelled from the synagogue, a functional excommunication from his community, this man is ready to embrace something or Someone real. Despite the mistreatment of the religious leaders, he is looking up. How often do we do that? When we’re mistreated, we are prone to defend ourselves, become mired in self-pity, or fight against the wrong we’ve received. But this man is looking for more–something he now knows to exist beyond the life he has always known. A man who believes in God when he has been cast from the only community of God he has known is a man who can see better than anyone else.
