Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 148

148. “My Father…is the One who glorifies Me” (John 8:54).

What do you say about yourself? One of the most powerful character traits Jesus demonstrated was that he never defended Himself. He quickly stood up for others, standing in the way of oppressors, speaking against those who would hurt others or turn His Father’s house into something unfair, but He never defended Himself–even when death was on the table. Given our tendency toward pride, it’s hard to imagine any of us being so careless of ourselves. We take offense, fight for our rights, and react strongly to the unfairness that is aimed in our direction. Could we learn to let God be our Defender? Could we trust Him to show what we really are? This may be the most challenging step in our pursuit of Christ.
