Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 147

147. “If anyone keeps My word, he will not see death” (John 8:51).

What does Jesus mean by “keeps My word?” Herein lies the great debate of what is needed to gain eternal life? Even the biblical authors seem to take different positions on the continuum between grace and good works. Jesus frequently equates obedience with love, at least in those statements recorded by John. Modern times have us saying a sentence prayer and acknowledging Jesus as God as the pivotal choice, but John certainly includes some behavioral evidence in his definition of believe. It seems Jesus does as well. Simply admitting Jesus is God can’t be enough since demons manage that. Instead, we must be “followers” of Jesus, going where He is going, walking the path He has called us to walk.
