Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 127

127. Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with His finger (John 8:6).

Whether or not there’s a content to Jesus’ writing that enhances the story, one thing is clear–the intensity of the religious leaders isn’t going to elevate Jesus’ blood pressure. He remains in His own world, not goaded into an argument. A leader would be wise to see this scene clearly. When we are attacked, accused, or criticized, wisdom takes a step back, maintains composure, and responds in even tones of one’s own choosing. Don’t let others escalate you. Don’t give them control of your emotions, but stay within yourself and you’ll be able to respond with greater judgment. Many battles are won in how carefully they are fought.
