The Brotherhood – Part 129

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

God is honored by my effort. That’s what Colossians 3:23-24 tells us:

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

Now, the context of Paul’s words was our workplace. he wasn’t speaking of the energy we bring to Sunday worship, but of our efforts on the job. Do you think of your work as a place to honor God? Sure, for most the workplace is a place with a much different focus. The businesses we give forty plus to each week are about growth and bottom-lines. But the Apostle is saying that those places should be about something else–honoring the Lord. And, there’s more to that than just staying out of the unsavory conversations.

Work hard. Give your best.

No, this isn’t a halftime pep talk. We are to show the character of the One who lives in us as we clock in every day. We are to be dependable and faithful in our work, just as we seek to be in our worship.

Okay, some might be thinking, Do I have to, I mean, you don’t know my boss. In my experience, “have-tos” are rarely fulfilling. But if you can add a little “want-to” things tend to feel different. When you give your best, you will discover that your best often gets better. When you honor God in your work, He often shows up to honor you. Each of us want God’s best for our lives, but if we don’t bring our best to the table, we shouldn’t expect Him to make up the difference.

Give your best, not because you love your job or admire your boss. Give you best because you know your Creator and you love Him for giving you life. Show Him how grateful you are for that life by living it as fully as you can.

And when you give your best, you’ll soon see your future headed on a new trajectory.
