Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 104

104. Jesus brothers said to him, “You ought to leave here and go to Judea” (John 7:3).

The previous verses tell us that there were men in Judea who sought to kill Jesus. Verse 5 tells us that His brothers didn’t believe in Him. So are they trying to send Him to His death? Are they pushing Him away so He can be destroyed? Given the amazing moments Mary had experienced in giving birth and raising Jesus, it seems likely that her other children would have grown up in His shadow. Perhaps, like Joseph of old, there is resentment that has reached the level of tragic action. Indeed, their rejection of their half-brother plays out elsewhere in the story as well. While it is seldom talked about, it may be that Joseph is more of a type of Jesus than we realized.
