The Brotherhood – Part 125

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

Watched my favorite NFL team this weekend as they collapsed in the second half, giving up the 2nd largest lead in NFL playoff history. The pit of my stomach remains knotted and I’m still grieving and unable to watch a SportsCenter broadcast, lest they add further comment.

They lost.

But more than the game was lost. The memory of the great moments that helped them build their large lead are gone too. Amazing runs, remarkable pass plays, defensive excellence that made the other team look completely overmatched marked the first 55% of the game.

And there I was in my hotel room, expressing every joyous moment with shouts, fist-pumps, and even and occasional leap to me feet! (At one point, I strutted the full length of that room with my arms in the air.)  It was exhilarating!

But all that is lost. The memories of ecstasy now just torment me with thoughts of what might have been. If you don’t finish well, if you don’t win the game, no one will remember your best moments. No one will want to…

That’s the way life works too.

You and I must determine to finish well. We must give our best every day to our marriages, our jobs, our connections with God, and our pursuit of good choices. Making a lot of those today, but failing tomorrow doesn’t leave you a winner. And if you make choices to fail, your successes will be a distant and tormenting memory of what “shoulda” been.

My team will be back on the field next year and the counter will reset to zero. But in life, you don’t get a second chance to finish well.
