The Brotherhood – Part 122

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

Run with horses…

More than twenty years ago, I read a book with that title and it deeply affected my life. The book takes an up close look at the life of the prophet Jeremiah, using the challenge God gave him in Jeremiah 12:5:

“If racing against mere men makes you tired,
how will you race against horses?
If you stumble and fall on open ground,
what will you do in the thickets near the Jordan?

The powerful idea is that if the daily grind saps all your strength, how can you aspire to a higher race? You see, God had something greater for Jeremiah, but the prophet would have to rise above his low-level frustrations if he would ever find it.

I think God has a higher race for all of us. He wants to demonstrate His greatness in our lives by elevating our capacity, lifting us to higher levels, and making us more than we could ever be on our own.

But to get there, we have to rise above some stuff.

We have to rise above pettiness. It’s so easy to let the same frustrations that hold down others control our thoughts and steal our energy.

We have to rise above gossip. If we want the higher life, we must let go of lower behaviors. Getting wrapped up in the latest speculations at work doesn’t propel us upward. It brings us down quickly.

We have to rise above self-focus. If God is going to elevate us to the place He intends, we can’t afford to be thinking of ourselves. We must have His agenda, His heart, and a desire to glorify Him if He will enter us in His “horse race.”

We have to lift our eyes. If that race is on a higher plane, then we must raise our eyes to a new level. We must step back from the focus before us and look to see what God might be seeing or doing around us. You can’t run a race if you aren’t looking for the right path.

You and I were made for more. We were designed for more than 70-80 years of normal. We are made in God’s image, and through Christ, the damage we’d done to that image has been cleaned up. Now we can live, we can climb, we can run…maybe even with horses…
