The Brotherhood – Part 121

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

What kind of man does our world really want?

Last night, I was reading a good book about manhood and how being the author’s vision of the ideal man has become less a priority in modern times. While our culture’s image of the ideal woman is riddled with lust and ripe for exploitation, it is, nonetheless, clear. But for men, the picture is more fuzzy.

Today, beards are in for some–the maxxed out, uncontrollable kind. Others prioritize the gym, where every sinew and fiber is expanded to its maximum potential. Still others look for sensitivity, knees that are quick to bend for a child, while another group prizes those with bluetoothed ears–the evidence of a quick ascender up one of life’s ladders.

What is a real man? While I’m not one to blame each societal ill on our entertainment options, I can’t help but see that men are a mixed bag on the screen too. Some drive fast and furiously while others are easy marks for lampooning. Some kick and punch powerfully and blow things up with their ingenuity while others find intelligent thought just beyond their grasp.

Maybe we’re looking for our answer in wrong places. In Micah 6:8, God offers His input into the measure of a man.  There He calls us to “love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly (with Him).” A man who is merciful, does what is right, and manages to keep his opinion of himself in proper balance seems to be the Creator’s favored idea.

I like God’s idea best, but the point is that each of us are trying to be something. We are allowing someone’s measure of a man to color our target. So take a quick look at what you’re aiming for. Is your ideal man really ideal? Make sure the road you’re on can deliver on its promise. How sad to chase someone’s dream of a real man only to find that it was only a dream…
