Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 94

94. The Jews began to grumble at Him because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven” (John 6:41).

The issue of faith is always controversial. What are you willing to believe about Jesus? Is He amazing? Is He a prophet? Or is He God? Since we live at such a distance from His earthly journey, we can forget how difficult it would have been to believe a man we know could be God himself. Someone making this same claim would be considered insane in our modern context. But even for us, faith is controversial. We must believe that God penetrated our atmosphere and lived among us, and that His subsequent death had an eternal purpose in washing away the sins of those who believe. We must believe that all things originated in Him and are sustained by Him. We must believe many things that cause the modern mind to question our sanity as well. Faith is the substance of what is unseen–it demands that we place our full weight on what others find absurd.
