Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 87

87. it was dark and Jesus had not yet joined them (John 6:17).

Sometimes life feels that way. We wait anxiously for God to step into our dark moment, but so far it doesn’t seem as if He has. Now, surely this text is little more than a narrative comment and not intending deeper truth, but it does spark thoughts of moments that feel similar. The idea that God is “elsewhere” understandably makes us uncomfortable. Except that He is no longer elsewhere. In the Incarnation, Jesus limited himself to a single time and place, but those boundaries have now been removed. Instead, His activity is governed by His promises. He is with us, even when we see more darkness than light. He is not at a distance, particularly if we have asked Him to come close.
