Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 75

75. And he has given him the authority to judge because he is the Son of man (John 5:27).

We understand Jesus’ unique position among us, because He is God come among us. But this verse shows how Jesus is also unique among the Godhead in that He has become man. For that reason, Jesus says, He has been given the right to judge. Now there’s nothing lacking in God the Father’s knowledge, but He gives the right of judgment to the Son because of the intimate connection He now has as One of us. The implications for Trinitarian studies is immense, but so are the implications for judgment. The right to judge is earned by those who dwell among the judged–who have walked against the same winds that blow against others. In other words, we don’t judge in others what we do not know in ourselves.
