Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 73

73. He can only do what he sees the Father doing (John 5:19).

Jesus speaks first of the power He’s been given by the Father, but now He describes how that power is used–to do what He sees the Father doing. Is that our hope for the power of God in our lives? Do we want to be doing what God is doing or do we have an agenda that would bring us attention? This is a challenging question for the modern leader. Today we measure one another by our number of followers. We have Twitter followers, Facebook friends, and other collections that reveal our social connection. We have the ever-apparent temptation toward drawing crowds or building great congregations. Easily we can slip into the hope that God will stamp our efforts to build a kingdom for ourselves. My guess is that if we try to do only what we see God doing, we’d be doing a lot less and likely doing it a lot better.
