The Brotherhood – Part 98

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

I’m on a movie set this week, and I can’t talk about it.

This informational embargo exists for a few more days, until shooting is done, to keep crowds from infiltrating the set. So here’s my effort to tell you what I feel without describing what I saw.

At the core of this important story is a mom on her way to discovering her value in that titanic role. Now, this is a blog for men, so let me steer from the core story to a subplot that stood out to me.

Yesterday, I listened as the starlet of this film described her character’s husband as a “rock star.” She claimed his character was an amazing man, and the few clips we saw affirmed her over-the-top assertion. In her quest to discover her value as a mom, she had one voice consistently in her ear, applauding her, caring for her, and proclaiming her as an amazing and valuable person.

Next year, your wife may drag you to see this film, and I hope she does. You see, even the few clips I saw challenged me to be a greater encourager in my wife’s life. As she balances the many tasks of her life–home, kids, work, and even me–I want to affirm her excellence more than ever.

It’s too easy to focus on the single tracks of our own lives. We become consumed with our work, our hobbies, or whatever drives our days, and can miss the available view of all our wives are juggling. But a large part of our roles as husbands is to strengthen, encourage, and even help our wives in their numerous assignments. An annual trip to the flower store probably doesn’t really cut it.

So today, let me borrow from what I think I’ll learn from a movie I’ll someday see. Let your wife know you support her, applaud her, and even are amazed by her. Your words carry more weight than anyone else’s so use them to build her up.
