Notes from the Journey with the Disciples – 48

48. “I have no husband,” she replied (John 4:17).

Perhaps much can be made concerning the condition of this woman. She may have been abandoned by all who promised to love her. She may have lived promiscuously and now left to loneliness and scorn. She may have outlived five husbands, though there’s no indication that she is elderly. But perhaps the power of her words aren’t in their literal possibilities. Perhaps they reveal even more about the condition of her life. She is at the well alone because she is alone in her heart. There is none to provide a covering to her life, no one to truly lean on, no one she can count on. She is as alone at the well as she is in life. But on this day, she is not alone at the well, nor will she ever be truly alone again.
